So the next question we come to naturally is…

How many more solar panels do you need to charge your electric car (ev)?

How many solar panels to charge and electric (ev) car?
It comes down to the math and your unique needs, size of your installation, etc.  Let’s do some average calculations for solar panels charging your electric car in Long Island / NYC:

Regardless of which electric car you have, on average they need about an additional 200-250 kWh / month of electricity usage. Bigger batteries need more panels but 8-10 solar panels should be able to give you the charge you need on average.

These numbers we are simply basing from the average efficiency of the Chevy Volt, Nissan Leaf, and Mitsubishi iMiEV — which is around 4-5 miles / kWh, and for an average Long Island / NYC driver (12,000 miles per year). Also calculating that you’re using your car for mostly all of your driving, and you are only charging the car at home and not at an additional carport at work or anything.

So how much would an extra 200-250 kWh cost per month?

Just multiply 200-250 by your ConEd (NYC) or PSEGLI (Long Island) rate — average which is about  $.185 in Long Island and .24 in NYC, so this additional usage would cost you about $50-60 per month LI/NYC.
