Solar Power; Affordable Housings New Best Friend

THE LARGEST AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROVIDERS TOGETHER WITH NON PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS DEMONSTRATE HOW COMBINING A SOLAR POWER SYSTEM WITH AN ENERGY STORAGE (SOLAR+STORAGE) SYSTEM PROTECT THOSE THAT NEED IT MOST WHILE PROVIDING MASSIVE SAVINGS.

How did this breakthrough come about? How did storage & solar power become a game changer?

Clean Energy Group, a nonprofit dedicated to national advocacy on climate change and renewable energy, recently released a unique report revealing that putting renewable solar energy together with energy storage systems (solar+energy) can safeguard vulnerable populations during natural disasters or blackouts all the while providing lasting savings and financial assets.

In an original case study carried out as a part of a longitudinal endeavor by The Resilient Power Project (www.resilient-poer.org) and in conjunction with Meridian Institute (www.merid.org) Clean Energy Group demonstrated the benefits of expanding the use of renewable energy in times of crisis to affordable housing and indispensable community facilities.

The study comes three years after the power went out on the East Coast for upwards of 8-million people during Superstorm Sandy.  Lewis Milford, co-author, and president of Clean Energy group stated that during the storm, millions had power cut off during Sandy – including those with solar power systems.  Combining renewable energy, like solar power with an energy storage system helps keep people safe when the power goes out, especially to those that may need it like the disabled and elderly.

Data collected from buildings in New York, Washington, and Chicago by Clean Energy Group was used to establish whether there are any economic and community benefits to using solar+storage systems.  According to the report, findings indicate solar power energy systems in combination with battery storage systems have the potential provide economic reward via power usage and power output with Net Metering (excess power generated by the system is returned to the grid).

The initial cost of installing the system ultimately pays for itself over the duration of use.  Not only that, though the most expensive piece of the system is the battery storage, continued use will force the cost to go down due to technological refinement.  The more the market develops, the more incentives there will be to advance the expense.
In today’s market, with green initiatives and renewable energy being a priority for the public, it only makes sense to use the technologies available, compelling them to be improved upon and perfected.  It may well be the leader in providing complete renewable energy for affordable housing.
